Frequently asked questions
Is the QR code or my data sent to a server?
No. The QR code is generated entirely in your browser, on your device. The text or URL you encode never leaves the page, so it is safe for private links, internal docs, and Wi-Fi passwords.
What is error correction (L, M, Q, H) and what should I pick?
Error correction is how much of the QR code can be obscured or damaged while still scanning. L is about 7% recovery, M is about 15%, Q is about 25%, H is about 30%. Higher correction makes the code denser (more squares). M is the default and works for most uses. Pick H if you plan to overlay a logo in the centre or print on glossy stock that may scuff.
PNG or SVG, which should I download?
PNG is a raster image, good for slide decks, social posts, photo prints, anywhere fixed sizes work. SVG is vector, scales to any size without blurring, best for posters, business cards, and print-shop submissions. If you might resize the code, use SVG.
Can I make a Wi-Fi or contact QR?
Yes, by encoding the right plain-text string. For Wi-Fi: WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;; (T is auth type, S is SSID, P is password). For contact: a vCard string starting with BEGIN:VCARD. Paste the formatted string into the text box and scan to test on a phone.
Do QR codes expire or stop working?
Static QR codes encoded with the destination (like the ones this tool makes) never expire. They will keep working as long as the destination URL is live. Dynamic QR codes (which route through a tracking service) can expire if the service is shut down or the user stops paying. This tool makes static codes.
